Dr. Beomju Kim | Theoretical Advances | Research Excellence Award

Korea University | South Korea

Dr. Beomju Kim is a Ph.D. candidate in the Integrated M.S.–Ph.D. program in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Power & Energy) at Korea University, Seoul, Republic of Korea. His research focuses on advancing the stability, robustness, and operational reliability of modern power systems undergoing rapid energy transition driven by high penetration of renewable and inverter-based resources. His primary research interests include power system stability and dynamics, renewable energy integration—particularly offshore wind and HVDC-linked systems—system inertia and frequency stability, model-free dynamic monitoring, and grid robustness assessment. A defining aspect of his work is addressing the challenges posed by reduced synchronous inertia in future power systems and developing practical solutions to maintain frequency security in zero- or low-inertia environments. Beomju Kim has been actively involved in numerous nationally funded and industry-driven research projects supported by major Korean institutions such as the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP), National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), and Korea Power Exchange (KPX). His contributions span a wide range of topics, including HVDC operation planning for the Jeju power system, nationwide offshore wind grid-connection planning, ESS utilization strategies for inertia-deficient systems, coordinated HVDC control for islanded grids, and policy development for enhanced frequency control. More recently, his work has focused on novel inertia energy measurement techniques and model-free dynamic monitoring platforms for future power systems dominated by inverter-based resources.
